Colonial Week in U.S. History!

Hello Parents,

We have just finished our second day of our Colonial Week. This is a "hands-on" week with activities allowing students feel what it might be like in colonial America. The first two days were set up with quilting. The idea was to get students to understand how time consuming it was for families to make their own clothes and then using scraps or worn out clothing to make quilts. The quilts were not just to cover beds but were also used to cover windows and doors in drafty houses. Most students just made quilt squares. Some are helping to make a quilt which can be used as a fundraiser for our 8th grade Boston trip. Many thanks to Andrea German and Stephanie Eddy for volunteering their time in the classroom over the past two days. I would love to find a volunteer to help finish the quilt (this is where my knowledge ends). Let me know if you can help.

Tomorrow, Bob Ware is coming in to help with colonial woodworking. We have an assortment of tools dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries which students will get to try out. The focus again will be on how much time it took to accomplish certain tasks. We will also talk about post and beam construction and some of the tools used to do this type of construction. Our last day will focus on colonial games that kids played. I will have 4-5 games set up that the students can play in a stations approach. So far students seem to be enjoying themselves.

There is no homework this week. I will try to have PowerSchool up to date by the end of the week. I am still working on grading tests from last week.

Have a great week.

Boston Update and Calendar Raffle

Dear Families,

This year, we have been doing a great job on fundraising for Boston.
Thanks to the work that you all have done, we are in the best position
financially that we have ever been in. We only need to raised $18,000
more. As you may know, we have just started the Calendar Raffle. Since
the calendar raffle is put together all by donated items, we get 100% of
the profit. This means if each student in the middle school sells five,
we could earn approximately $15,000. That would put us very close to our
goal.

Before I explain the raffle, I just wanted to acknowledge that we raised
over $900 with the candle fundraiser. I want to publicly thank Paula Cary
and Aneita Menard for putting this together. We are hoping to get the
candles out to students before break.

Details on the Calendar Raffle

How the calendar works
+ They cost $10
+ A winner is drawn for each day in February
+ If you win, your name gets put back in the drawing
+ There are over $1000 worth of prizes and each day is at least a $40 value

What do the students need to do?
+ Get the calendars and raffle tickets from their advisory teacher.
+ Sell the calendars, student receives $10 and gets the red ticket with
the name and phone number, the customer keeps the calendar and the lower
portion of the red ticket.
+ The student the money and the tickets to their advisory teacher.
+ Any unsold calendars are returned to the advisory teacher.

Incentives
+ Top advisory gets a ice cream party
+ Top seller gets 2 tickets for the new water park at Jay Peak
+ Any one who sells 10 tickets gets a pizza party and a movie

The calendar raffle was put together by Michelle Anemikos and Heidi
Slayton. They really put a lot of time and effort into this project.
Please thank them the next time you see them.

I appreciate the hard work that everyone has put in and I can guarantee
that your student will have an unforgetable time in Boston. This will be
a trip that they will remember the rest of their lives.

Thanks,
Joe

U.S. History: 12/12-12/16

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone had a good weekend. You can really feel the holiday season approaching inside and outside of the school. This week we are continuing with our exploration of the early colonies. I will introduce more of the reasons why the colonies were founded and who was settling there. This leads to the cultural differences that evolve over time in our early history. I will wrap up with all new material tomorrow and then launch into review to prepare for our test. The test will be on Thursday. Today students began putting together a "study packet". The study packet includes 7 pages (worksheets and quizzes). This is all the work we have done so far on this unit, mostly following the content in Chapter 5 of the textbook. If students lost work, I have extra copies that they can get from me. The completed study packet will be the student's "ticket" to play the review game on Wednesday. I suggest that students begin preparing for the test starting tonight with around 15 minutes of review. You can help by "quizzing" them from the study packet. This week's tasks are the following:

____ Chap. 5, Sect. 3-5 questions/vocabulary worksheet (due Wed.)
____ Completed "study packet" (due Wed)
____ TEST - Chap. 5- The 13 British Colonies (Thursday)

*Reminder - Permission slip and $9 for ice skating trip Friday is due TOMORROW. Thank you.

Have a great week.

U.S. History: 12/5-12/9

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone had a good weekend. The focus on Jamestown went very well last week. I feel that the students were engaged and interested. The outcome of the quiz was also pretty good. I had wanted all students to get at least 8/10 correct. We were close. PowerSchool is updated (four assignments and two quizzes so far). I am still looking for volunteers to help during "Colonial Week" set for 12/19-12/22. I will need help with sewing stations, running colonial games, and woodworking. Let me know if you can help. Thanks.

This week's focus will be on Plymouth. We will use Chapter 5, Section 2 as our guide. The settling of Plymouth and later the New England colonies will really show some of the cultural differences between the North and the South. As I said to the kids, how would our country be different today if the Mayflower did not get blown off course? The following are this week's tasks:

____ Chap. 5, Sect. 2 worksheet (due Wednesday) - questions 1-7 are homework tonight if they did not finish them in class.
____ Map of colonies (due Fri)
____ Quiz: Chap. 5, Sect. 2 (Wed).

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great week.

U.S. History: 11/28-12/2

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Students seemed to be in a good mood today.......probably well rested! We are starting a new unit on the "early colonies", starting with Jamestown and Plymouth. Then we move into the 13 colonies with reasons why people from England were moving, cultural differences, life in the colonies, Native American interactions, and more. This would be a great time to share any stories passed down through your families related to this time period if your families date back that far.

I will also be having a hands-on "Colonial Week" as we get closer to Christmas break. This is a very fun time where students have an opportunity to experience activities from the colonial era. I am looking for parent volunteers to help on some of those days. Specifically I need help with "quilting" - helping small groups. I also need help with running games on one of the days. Let me know if you could help. I will let you know dates as we get closer (it most likely will take place during the week of 12/19-12/22). Thank you.

This week will focus on Jamestown. We will be using Chapter 5, Section 1 as a guide. The following are the tasks for the week:

____ Ch. 5, Sect. 1 questions/vocabulary (due Wed)
____ Web Activity: Jamestown ey.glencoe.com, chap. 5 web activities (dueThurs)
____ QUIZ: Ch. 5, Sect. 1 (Fri.)

Have a great week.

Boston Update - Thank You, the Dance, Seeking Donations for Calendar Raffle

THANK YOU! and Fundraising Update

The Tag Sale was a big success. We raised $1228.50 from the tag sale
itself. We also got a $1,000 grant from the The Redducs Foundation. The
grant was a very pleasant surprise.

I would like to thank all of you who help out. Whether it was through
donating items, working at the storage unit, baking goods, setting up, or
taking down, without you this event would not have been a success.

I would also like to thank ACE Storage in Milton who so kindly donated
their space to hold the goods for our tag sale. I would recommend that
you would support them for your storage needs.

Schwan's raised just over $1,000.

We are now have $23,000 to fundraise.

Middle School Dance

This Friday is the Middle School Halloween Dance, from 6:45-9:00. It is
$3.00 with costume, $5.00 without. Because of the football game, students
should be dropped off at the back of the school, where the buses drop off
and pick up students, and enter at the back door. Once inside the dance,
students are not allowed to leave the dance until 9:00, unless they are
being picked up early by an adult. All proceeds will go towards the
Milton Middle School Boston Trip.

Calendar Raffle

For the next couple of weeks, we will be soliciting donations for our
February Calendar raffle. Prior to February, people will buy a calendar
and during each day of the month they will have a chance to win a prize.
We already have movie tickets and a couple of Vermont Teddy Bears. We
have already asked several local businesses to donate to this raffle. We
know that we have many awesome parents who work at some very cool places
and we are wondering if your place of employment will would consider
donating to our cause. If you have something to offer, please contact
Michelle Anemikos at 893-4547 or anemikos@comcast.net or contact Heidi
Slayton at sherw05468@comcast.net or contact me at 893-3230 ext. 217 or

This Week in U.S. History: 10/17-10/19

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone had a good weekend. We are starting a new unit focusing on the "Age of Exploration". Some of this information will be coming from Chapter 3 in our textbook. Even with the short week, we will have tasks. They are as follows (all students should have written them in their planners):

____ make corrections on Test (Wed)
____ Chap. 3, Sect. 1 Guided Reading and Vocabulary (Wed)

Tonight I would like all students to finish the vocabulary part of the worksheet.

I graded the tests and have started entering scores in PowerSchool. The test was worth 40 points so the number you will see will be the number correct out of 40. Students today started fixing their mistakes. I will include a second score in PowerSchool that will reflect this change. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Science update

Science Update - October 14, 2010

This week in science we continued our exploration of identifying and
assigning variables, setting up data tables, graping data, analyzing data
and making claims about what the information implies and backing claims
with specific evidence. These inquiry skills are an integral part of
science and will be empasized and reinforced throughout the year.

The students had a data table/graphing packet that they worked on in class
on Thursday and were required to complete for homework for today (7th
grade only need complete the data table portion at this point). If the
assignment was completed you should see my initials by in your student's
planner for the work. If the work was not completed, there will be a
circle and no initials. Any work that is not done will be expected to be
complete by Monday of next week.

We will be investigating the dynamics and characteristics of ecosystems in
greater depth in the next few weeks.

Have a pleasant weekend and enjoy the fall foliage.

This Week In U.S. History: 10/10-10/14

Hello Parents,

As you know, we are into our second and final week of NECAPs. Homework is very light this week. In class we are preparing for our first test of quarter 1 which is on Native Americans (Chap. 2, sections 1 and 2). In preparation, I am having students put together a study packet. This is all the work we have covered in class over the past few weeks. It totals 6 pages (worksheets and notes). This is work that all students should have completed by now (check PowerSchool if you want to check if your son/daughter completed the work). They will use the study packet in a review game on Thursday (it is their ticket to playing the game). Students should also be reviewing this study packet each night (I suggest 15 minutes per night). You could help by quizzing them with questions.

A quick note about PowerSchool............If you see any letter grades (ie. A, B, C, D, F), please disregard these as we are not using this type of grade. PowerSchool is averaging some of the numbers (such as with the Milton History project grades) which then assigns a letter grade. This can be misleading. Please refer to my earlier post for project grades where I explain what a 1, 2, 3, 4 mean as a grade. Thank you.

Have a great week.

English Tasks 10/3 through 10/7

Hello to All,
The following tasks are bit unusual, I admit. However, we have an unusual
week with NECAP testing. The tasks are designed to be proactive:
Get a lot of sleep
Eat nutritious food (and bring in nutritious snacks if you need them)
Think positively
Do your best

Our past two projects, My Favorite Place in Milton Photostory (due
September 23) and the Published piece (radio ad, alternate ending to a
story, or newspaper front page, due on September 30th) should be completed
and handed in. Ask your student if they'll share their project with you.
The projects are great and interesting to see.
Take care,

This Week In U.S. History

Hello Parents,

We are into our first NECAP week. Because of this, I tend not to give homework to help keep the anxiety level down for students. We really want students to focus on doing their best on the NECAP. When we do have classes this week, the focus is on Native American culture groups (Chap.2, Sect. 2). By the end of Thursday we will be finished with this section. We end the week with our field trip to hike Mt. Mansfield........can school get any better than this!

PowerSchool is up to date. I still am wrapping up with Milton History project grades. When you do see these, they will be scores of 1-4. A 1 means that the project is incomplete. A 2 means that the student is "working towards" the standard, but has not reached it yet. This could mean that writing and / or content was not sufficient, effort was not quite there, deadlines may not have been met, or time was not utilized well in class. A 3 means that the standard was met and my expectations for the project were met as outlined in the project requirements. A 4 means the student did more than what was required and "exceeds the standard". Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a great week.

Boston Field Trip Tag Sale

Dear Parents,

On Saturday, October 22nd, we will be holding a tag sale at the Milton
Middle School from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This will be in conjunction with
Milton Elementary School's Team Expedition's tag sale being held at the
Elementary School. The idea is to create a "Come to Milton" campaign to
visit our two gigantic tag sales. Here is how you can help.

1) Clean out your house, garage, shed, barn, closet, attic, car, office
etc. and donate any gently-used goods to the tag sale. Items can be
dropped off at Ace Storage, Unit # 14 on Landfill Road in Milton. People
will be there to collect goods on:

Wednesday, October 12th from 4:00 pm. - 7:00 pm.
Saturday, October 15th from 9:00 am. - 1:00 pm.
Wednesday, October 19th from 9:00 am. - 1:00 pm.

You can also drop goods off at the school on October 22nd from 7:00 am. -
10:00 pm.

If these times do no work for you please contact me, Joe Smith, at
893-3230 ext. 217 or email jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org to make alternative
arrangements.

2) Help collect donations at Ace Storage at the above times. We need
someone to unlock the unit and be there while people bring their items.

3) Help set up the day of the tag sale. Set up will take place from 6:30
am – 9:00 pm. We will be looking for a truck to help move the goods from
the storage unit to the school.

4) Help break down the tag sale. Breakdown will be from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm.

5) Bake delicious food. Please drop off at the school on the 22nd between
8:30 am and 12:00 pm.

6) Spread the word. Let your family members, friends, and co-workers know
about the tag sale. Post on Facebook, Tweet, or any other place where
people will see it. Encourage them to donate goods and to shop on the
22nd. One person's refuse is another person's treasure.

7) Shop at the tag sale and find all those hidden treasure.

Please remember that we are asking all 8th grade families to participate
in at least three fundraisers. Here is an excellent opportunity for you to
participate for those of you who are not comfortable going door-to-door
selling items.

Please contact me to let me know how you can help.

Thanks,
Joe Smith

Boston Letter

September 14, 2011

Dear Families,

As a rite of passage for our 8th grade students, we go on a three-day,
two-night field trip to Boston. This trip serves as a culmination of
students' learning with visits to the Boston Museum of Science, a variety
of historical sights, as well as exposing them to the culture of a big
city. Previous 8th grade students who have gone on this trip have raved
about what an awesome experience this trip was to them. This year the trip
will take place on May 23rd through May 25th.

Unfortunately, this trip is not free. The total expense of this trip is
approximately $43,000 which comes out to $319 per student. In order to
keep the cost down for families, we are hoping to raise $23,000. This
will ensure that students only need to pay $100 to go on the trip.
However, if this is difficult for your family, there are scholarships
available. No student will be denied going on this trip due to financial
concerns. There is a $25 deposit that is due on November 4th for
students who plan on going on the trip. This deposit is refundable if you
let us know that you will not be going on the trip by April 20th.

In order to spread out the fundraising work, this year each student will
be required to fully participate in at least three fundraisers. There
will be a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, and I have included
a tentative schedule of events at the end of this letter. Students will
work with their teams and advisory teachers to come up with a fundraising
plan.

There are three fundraisers coming up for which we need help from parents:

1) We will be having a fall yard sale on October 22nd. If you are
cleaning out your house and have stuff that you would like to get rid of,
please consider donating it to the 8th grade Boston trip. I will provide
more information about a drop off location for donated items shortly.

2) We are looking for donated items that we can use for our silent auction
at the Harvest Dinner in November and for our Calendar Raffle in February.
Specifically we are looking for items that people would be interested in
such as gift certificates from area businesses, iTune cards, electronic
devices, ski lessons, bikes, etc. If you have something you would like to
donate please contact Michelle Anemikos at 893-4547, Heidi Slayton at
_____________or myself at jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org.

3) We also are looking for healthy snacks. The middle school runs a snack
cart for 15 minutes each day. We like to offer healthy snacks such as:

Granola type bars
Baked chips/Sun Chips
Baked snacks, Goldfish
Fruit/cheese
Apple sauce
Pudding
Pretzels
Graham crackers
Slim Jims
Animal crackers
Popcorn
Yogurt sticks
Fruit leather
Cheese sticks
Jerky
Granola
If you buy it in bulk, we will bag it. Please contact Sharon King, at [
mailto:sking@mtsd-vt.org ]sking@mtsd-vt.org for more information.

I am looking forward to a successful year of fundraising for another great
Boston trip. If you have any questions about the Boston trip, please
contact me at 893-3230 ext. 217 or [ mailto:jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org
]jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org

Sincerely,
Joe Smith

This week In history.

Hello Parents,

This week in U.S. History we start with finishing project presentations on our mini-unit focusing on Milton history. The presentations will probably last through classes on Monday and Tuesday. I will update PowerSchool after all presentations are completed to reflect whether or not I collected your son/daughter's project. I thought I would be able to do this last Friday but we were only able to get through the technology based projects.

After projects are presented, we will start our unit on "First Americans". This unit will focus on the early inhabitants of North America and the theories on how they got here. We will continue into the early cultures that developed before European contact. I will post the homework assignments either Monday or Tuesday of this week. Have a great week.

Welcome to U.S. History!

Hello Parents,

I hope everyone has started to settle into the new school year. As you have hopefully seen from your son/daughter, we have begun our year of U.S. History starting with Milton. We started a mini-unit focusing on the "living history" in Milton. Students are working on projects to capture some of this information that is not written in history books. Some students have interviewed some of the older members of our community, some have taken pictures focusing on a specific theme such as century old homes, cemetaries, barns, farms and landforms, and others are creating timelines and modern town seals representing change. Last week we had four community members sharing stories of the past to students in the classroom This week we walked to the Milton Hisorical Society Museum and participated in a scavenger hunt through Milton's history. This Friday we are concluding our unit with project presentations. Students will be able to show off their hard work and hopefully teach their peers at the same time. I hope to be able to showcase some of this work to all of you as well in the near future.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Thursday "open house"!

Sincerely,

Mr. Burton

Khan Academy

Yesterday in Math class students were able to log into Khan Academy.  This site is an excellent way for students to practice what they have learned in school or hone their basic math skills.  This site has tutorials to help with basic addition all they way to advance calculus.  You can also coach or view you students progress by signing into the sight yourself and having your student select you as a coach.

Boston Fundraising Committee 9/6

Dear 8th Grade Parents/Guardians,
This year we will once again be going to Boston for three days and two nights. While in Boston, students visit historical sites, museums and take in the culture of a city. The cost of this trip is approximately $325 per student. To ensure that families only have to pay $100, we need to collectively raise $23,000. I am putting together a committee of parents to discuss ways to fundraise this amount and to create a calendar of fundraising events throughout this year. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please join me on Tuesday, September 6th, at 6:00 p.m., in the library. With a group of committed parents, I am sure that we can achieve our goal and give the students an experience of a life time in Boston.

Welcome to Team Cassiopeia

Welcome to Team Cassiopeia. Enclosed you will find a letter from our new principal and a contact information form that we would like you to fill out and return on the first day of school. In this letter, we will go over our philosophy, expectations, and team schedule.

Team Cassiopeia is a new team that was formed from teachers who were previously on teams Apollo, Athena, and Poseidon. We are excited to be working with you and your student and hope to foster your student's talents and help them become responsible learners and citizens within our school and the community. To help accomplish this we will be working in partnership with families. To facilitate this communication we will be using email and a team Wiki. In the next few weeks, your student will receive a user name and a password to the Team Cassiopeia Wiki. They are expected to share this login information with you and it is here where you will be able to follow team activities, assignments, and updates.

Additionally, we encourage you to monitor your student's progress by checking PowerSchool on a weekly basis (http://powerschool.mtsd-vt.org/public/). If you need your login information or need help using PowerSchool please contact us and we can help you. We also may contact you by phone and/or email to discuss any concerns or celebrations we have around your student.

Supplies

Below is a list of supplies that your student will need for the school year. If you have trouble getting the supplies, please contact us and we can make sure that your student is prepared for school.

Two 1 ½ inch binders Black or Blue Pens

One 2 inch binders Highlighters

Dividers for the binders Flash drive

4 Folders with pockets 1 Box of colored pencils

2 Composition books 1 Pair of scissors

2 Glue Sticks Loose Leaf Paper

Box of Pencils with sharpener

Planners

At the beginning of the school year, each student will receive a planner. It is expected that the student fill out his or her planner each day in class. This another good tool for families to monitor current assignments, assessments, and projects due.

Homework

In general, your student will only have homework, if they are unable to complete assignments during school. However, there will be times when your student will be asked to read, write and revise papers, or practice their lessons outside of school. If students do not complete their homework, teachers will develop a plan with the student to complete missing assignments. If missing homework becomes habitual we will contact families to develop a success plan.

Snacks

Each day, students will have the opportunity to have a snack during mid-morning. We strongly encourage students to bring in healthy snacks and we do not allow soda or energy drinks to be consumed in class.

Cell Phones

In an effort to provide the best possible education for students, we will not allow the use of cell phones in the classroom. If a student uses a cell phone during class it will taken and the student will be allowed to retrieve it at the end of the day. If this becomes a recurring problem, the parent or guardian will be contacted and asked to pick up the phone from the front office.

I-Pods

I-Pods are only allowed in class at the teacher's discretion. If the I-Pod becomes a distraction, the teacher will ask your student to put it away. If it continues to become an issue, we will contact the parent or guardian.

We look forward to an exciting and fun year at the Milton Middle School getting to know each other and learning together on Team Cassiopeia. If you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Team Cassiopeia
